Advancing the scientific study of language across Eastern Africa — through research, conferences, journals, and a growing community of scholars.
"The association was founded to further scientific and professional study of language in all its aspects across Eastern Africa."
Rooted in the Ford Foundation-sponsored Survey of Language Use and Language Teaching in Eastern Africa (SLULTEA) of the 1960s, LAEA brings together linguists from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia, and beyond. After a period of dormancy, LAEA was revived to serve not only professional linguists but all individuals interested in the study of language.
